Shangilia presently houses over 230 former street children in a cramped quarter acre rented plot consisting of a courtyard and a large colourful stage sided by twenty-eight rooms. A normal day at Shangilia begins at 5.00 am when the children rise from their bunk beds to have showers and prepare for breakfast and the day. There are eastern style toilets and showers and a small shed covers two large fuel-efficient wood burning stoves to cook meals that are communally prepared. The rooms surrounding the courtyard are used as classrooms, dormitories, stores, matron's room, library, clinic, computer room, recording room and offices. Under the leadership of Japheth Njenga, the staff provide the children with food, shelter, clothing, education and basic health care. Every afternoon, the children are coached in performing arts.
To support a child, it costs $88/- per month or $1056/- annually. This is inclusive of shelter, food, clothing, psycho-social support, health care, primary education, salaries for care-givers, electricity, water and performing arts training.
Home Construction
The compound housing the children is very crowded. Cap Anamur, a German NGO, purchased a piece of land for Shangilia on which we need your financial assistance to build boys and girls dormitories, toilet-showers, kitchen, open dining facilities, matron's rooms, storage space, offices, studio at $50 per square meter for a total of 960 square meters at $480,000/-
