An initial group of 32 young people were trained in matters of disease prevention and health care that included HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, adolescent health, abortion, contraceptives, teenage pregnancy, drug abuse and peer counseling. The group was also trained in performance techniques, club management and in capacity building to become responsible productive citizens. The youth share ideas and scripts, plot strategies and develop performances to express social messages at bus terminals, markets, schools and other institutions, often using giant puppets to attract the public.
Following the initial training, twenty members were selected, divided into groups of five, given training manuals and were invited to become trainers of trainers. Each group was asked to identify a group of 20 trainees and then return to Shangilia with a budget proposal to facilitate their training. These new groups have spread geographically from Kangemi as follows: Five trained another 20 youth in Kibagare. Five trained 20 in Kinoo Division in Kiambu. Five trained 20 in Gatina in Kawangware. And another five trained 20 more in Gichangi.
The original 32 trained youth meet every Thursday with a Shangilia staff member to share reports about their group's progress. Eighty youth have been trained by the original 20. The Youth-to-Youth project has proven remarkably resilient and effective. Shangilia is now implementing the next level of the Program which has the potential to have an impact on over 300 youth with an extended geographical outreach.
